The North British is Scotland’s third largest grain distillery, and is the only one that continued to use maize after all of the others switched to wheat.
One of only six dedicated grain distilleries in Scotland, the North British distillery was founded in a bid to challenge the monopoly the Distillers Company Ltd. had over the supply of grain. The distillery was built close to the railway lines and Union Canal, with ample room for expansion, which was quickly needed. Its name comes from the railway company that served the distillery. It’s also known as the NB locally.
This 17 Year Old release was distilled in 2009 and mindfully finished in new Oloroso and Palo Cortado Octaves.. We’re expecting to fill around 228 bottles at Natural Cask Strength, 62.1% ABV.
NOSE
An exceptionally rich, warm, and inviting bouquet opens with an abundant array of toasted hazelnuts, roasted pecans, and soft, velvety Medjool dates, balanced by a generous scatter of dark chocolate chips. A clean, golden cereal grain sweetness runs consistently throughout the background, providing a wholesome backbone that gracefully transitions into a light, elegant finish dusted with fine cocoa powder and gentle baking spice.
TASTE
Exceptionally intense, full-bodied, and beautifully concentrated by its robust cask strength, delivering a luxurious and expansive mouthfeel. Decadent chocolate-covered raisins, deeply steeped black tea leaves, and freshly ground espresso beans heavily coat the palate, seamlessly unfolding into layers of rich dried fruit, dark caramel, and structured oak, before giving way to a long, velvety, oak-driven, and winey finish that lingers impressively with warmth.
ABOUT THE LABEL
Our original label showed a slightly sinister character, possibly somebody in charge of a very large and potentially evil organisation. We’ve brought him front and centre, on our lilac background, and made him a little less sinister, as he’s really a lovely chap.
Can you spot the changes from the last release?
There might possibly be some Dalry Milk references, but don’t tell the Fun Police…
