The North British is Scotland’s third largest grain distillery, and is the only one that continued to use maize after all of the others switched to wheat.

One of only six dedicated grain distilleries in Scotland, the North British distillery was founded in a bid to challenge the monopoly the Distillers Company Ltd. had over the supply of grain. The distillery was built close to the railway lines and Union Canal, with ample room for expansion, which was quickly needed. Its name comes from the railway company that served the distillery. It’s also known as the NB locally.

This 17 Year Old release was distilled in 2009 and was mindfully finished in new Oloroso and Palo Cortado Octaves.. We’re expecting to fill around 466 bottles.

NOSE

Exceptionally clean, bright, and strikingly vibrant from the initial pour, the nose opens with crisp grain and invitingly rich confectionery undertones. A tempting array of mixed milk and dark chocolate treats unfolds gracefully, layered alongside warm toasted nuts, decadent buttery praline, delicate vanilla pastry, and a subtle touch of sweet honeyed oak.

TASTE

Deliciously rich, velvety, and deeply nutty on the palate, carrying subtle whispers of fine single-origin chocolate, soft medjool dates, creamy fudge, and sweet cocoa powder. As it sits on the tongue, it transitions gracefully into a light, crisp cereal note accented by candied citrus peel, gentle baking spices, and toasted oak, leaving an impeccably smooth, lingering, and beautifully balanced finish.

ABOUT THE LABEL

Our original label showed a slightly sinister character, possibly somebody in charge of a very large and potentially evil organisation. We’ve brought him front and centre, on our lilac background, and made him a little less sinister, as he’s really a lovely chap.

Can you spot the changes from the last release?

There might possibly be some Dalry Milk references, but don’t tell the Fun Police…
