If you’re in Japan, you may have had a sneak peek at the new 70cl Pulteney label (it was a bespoke bottling for our friends at Shinanoya) but this is the first globally available release.
Pulteney’s wash still features a distinctively massive, flat-topped boil bulb that maximizes reflux—legend claims it was cut to fit the distillery roof.
The spirit still further enhances character with a convoluted, coiling lyne arm and purifier, while traditional worm tub condensation adds significant weight to the final spirit.
Until fairly recently, it was long associated with Ballantine’s
This beauty is from a first fill ex-Bourbon Barrel.
We’re expecting just 328 bottles, and we don’t expect that to hang around for long.
NOSE
A masterclass in cask selection, highlighting how perfectly the distinctive maritime character of Pulteney and top-tier first-fill bourbon casks complement one another. The nose opens with deep, welcoming, and indulgent waves of rich, golden toffee, seamlessly balanced by lively, zesty, and tangy citrus notes that add a bright, refreshing lift. As it sits in the glass, deeper nuances of sweet oak and gentle coastal breezes begin to emerge.
TASTE
Exceptionally inviting and intricately complex, the palate leads with an immediate burst of vibrant, bright citrus alongside luscious, velvety creamy oak that is strikingly reminiscent of fine vanilla ice cream. As the dram unfolds across the tongue, a rich, fatty nuttiness dominated by freshly roasted cashews and buttery macadamia nuts takes centre stage, concluding with a prolonged, deeply satisfying, and highly characteristic coastal flourish of lingering salty lips.
ABOUT THE LABEL
We’ve had a label brief for the Pulteney distillery for a long time. It’s always been a distillery we’ve longed to bottle: A busy fishing harbour loaded with herring boats, with the ‘herring queen’ pageant underway.
The herrings were known as ‘silver darlings’. We’ve just made a silver darling our Herring Queen, against the backdrop of that busy fishing harbour.
