BOUTIQUE-Y WHISKY’S BOUTIQUEY RECORDS 2022

HEADLINERS

Small World Blend Batch 1, 44% ABV 208 Bottles RRP £50.95

A small world whisky blend created by our own Head of Whisky, the good Dr. Whisky himself, Sam Simmons. It’s another small batch limited edition of our World Whisky Blend, this time themed to bring back memories of childhood sweets and the sherbet-soaked innocence reflected by the “Disnae” book-on-tape-inspired label. When you hear this sound, turn the page!

N: Fruity, lemon and cherry sherbet with fresh peach. Memories of a small bag of handpicked retro sweets, vanilla and pineapple.

P: Bright with citrus, peach and honey turning slightly spicy before white chocolate and papaya.  More proof that planet Earth DOES make the best whisky in the universe!

Bunnahabhain Batch 23, 26 Year Old Single Malt 41% ABV 115 Bottles RRP £229.95

Our twenty third batch from the Bunnahabhain distillery is a 26 Year Old, bottled at 41% abv.

What’s it like? Exquisite! Just as you’d expect from this long aged Islay whisky, distilled before Bunnahabhain started experimenting with heavily peated malt.

N: Fruit pastels, fresh barley, and citrus notes. There’s gentle woodsmoke, always there, drifting in and out of intensity.

P: Classic Bunna; Malty with a hint of sea air. There’s also poached pear with a chocolate sauce, and the finish is long with pepper and that drifting woodsmoke.

Dailuaine Batch 6, 6 Year Old Single Malt 57.9% ABV 300 Bottles RRP £44.95

Our sixth batch from the Dailuaine distillery is this 6 Year Old release at 57.9% abv - that's natural cask strength, hence the  ‘NCS’ on the top left hand corner of the label. Distilled in June 2015 and matured in a single Sherry hogshead until we bottled it.

There’s a change from our traditional sulphur molecule bears labels on this release too. We’ve decided upon an older, waxy vinyl style.

N: Rich, fruity, grassy, and malty! Stewed plums and toasted hot cross buns, dripping with butter. Hints of ginger, Demerara sugar, and waxy candles

P: An oily mouthfeel. Rosy red apples, caramelised brown sugar, vanilla custard, and warming spices that linger long into the finish. Wonderful!

Blended Malt #1 Batch 8, 24 Year Old 56.6% ABV 285 Bottles RRP £134.95

From the heart of Dubbtown, Speyside, this B-side by DJ Stewart is our eighth batch of this handcrafted ‘teaspooned’ whisky

‘Teaspooning’ was introduced in the 1980’s by William Grant & Sons. By ‘teaspooning’ their malts, they protect their brand from Independent bottlers by releasing casks of only teaspooned malt. Obviously we can’t call it a ‘teaspooned’ malt on the label, as it’s not a SWA recognised term, so it’s labelled as a Blended Malt - although it’s hardly blended at all, as we all know…

N: Quite delicate initially, this slowly reveals its nature. Floral vanilla notes, rich, set honey, on buttered rye toast, and some hints of citrus.

P: Those rich, honey notes continue onto the palate, sweet brioche, creamy vanilla, hints of nuts, alongside rich oak, and some exotic spices linger; wild fennel.

Glenallachie Batch 6, 10 Year Old Single Malt 54.2% ABV 418 Bottles RRP £59.95

This, our sixth batch, is the first of a pair of 10 Year Old Glenallachies (Glenallachii?) that we’ve finished in a different cask to what it was originally filled into. This first of the pair has been finished in an ex-Makers Mark Bourbon cask.

N: Fragrant with summer grass meadows and creamy vanilla. Hints of peppery spices and zingy citrus, sweeten to candied lemons.

P: Sweet and spicy, with an oily mouthfeel. Toffee apples, woody spices and those summer grasses come through as a herbal element. Tasty!

Glenallachie Batch 7, 10 Year Old Single Malt 54.2% ABV 233 Bottles RRP £59.95

Our seventh batch is the second of a pair of 10 Year Old malts from Glenallachie that we’ve finished in a different cask to what it was originally filled into. This release has been finished in Pedro Ximenez Sherry quarter casks.

N: The PX Cask influence is immediately apparent with big rich chocolatey notes leading dark fruits; black cherry, medjool dates, and raisins

P: A silky smooth mouthfeel with rich dark chocolate with raisins and nuts. Spices quickly follow, with a prickle of pepper that lingers long into the finish

Both of these whiskies are bottled at 54.2% abv, and presented with matching artwork, a perfect pairing of two of the most recognisable styles of maturation found in Scotch.

Ledaig Batch 19, 19 Year Old Single Malt 59.1% ABV 450 Bottles RRP £119.95

This 19 Year Old Ledaig from the Isle of Mull’s Tobermory distillery is our nineteenth batch. Distilled in December 1994, and it’s been matured in a single Sherry butt, and we’ve bottled it at natural cask strength.

Ledaig is undoubtedly one of the most mispronounced distillery names in Scotland, but nothing’s been lost in translation here, we even have a waveform of the correct pronunciation displayed on our label.

N: An oily maritime smoke drifts through an autumnal walk in the forest. There’s a damp wood, leafy forest floor feel to this, alongside hints of rich marmalade and cinnamon buns.

P: The oiliness continues with the mouthfeel. Sweet ‘Juicyfruit’ gum with peppery spices and a pinch of salt. Finishing with a lingering beach bonfire smoke. Classic Ledaig!

Islay #3 Batch 5, 13 Year Old Single Malt 48.6% ABV 255 Bottles RRP £174.95

A 13 Year Old Single Malt from another undisclosed Islay distillery, with a good licking of Oloroso cask maturation. We’ve illegally downloaded this whisky and cannot name it, but with 8 distilleries on Islay, can you tell which one it is?

We’ve gone for a digital piracy look for our label here - anyone remember downloading those albums over dial-up internet?

N: Lots of smoky aromas with a mentholic tinge. An underlying fruity sweetness too; rum soaked raisins, and there’s a Mocha coffee note too

P: Sweet and smoky flavours fill the mouth but there’s also rich red fruit; Plums and blackberry jam. Burnt buttered toast with lingering smoke.

For your listening pleasure, while sipping your drams, the Whisky Team have been building a playlist bringing Big Band, Reggae, Classic Dance, House, Drum & Bass, Explicit Punk, Pop, Hip Hop, and World Music together.

WRAP UP

So, fourteen new releases, and almost all of them hail from Scotland, and even our  Small World Whisky Blend has a little Scottish grain in it’s make up. The eight new Boutique-y Records labels that artist Emily Chapelle has brought to life, rather magnificently, will mean you will probably want to collect the whole set! Just how good do they look together?

I’m picking my choice of tune for each of the whiskies, so look out for the Boutique-y Records playlist

Cheers!
