Distillerie de Labourdonnais is a relatively new facility in the village of Mapou, Mauritius. Built in 2006 (although it was originally called Rhumerie des Mascareignes), it features a continuous column still set up for the distilling rum made from fresh sugarcane juice. This delicate “rhum agricole” is all about the cask. Freshly distilled Rum was shipped to the UK and placed in an ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry barrel, where it picked up all manner of fruity notes to compliment the sugarcane juice Rum as distilled then left to mellow in a refill American oak barrel to marry. Balanced? Not exactly. Delicious without the use of any additives at all? Enthusiastically, YES!!!
We’re expecting a run of just 323 bottles for this absolute stunner, so act fast!
NOSE
Luscious vanilla opens the show, balanced by subtle notes of raw sugarcane. Deep aniseed and warm, spiced dried fruits weave through the background.
TASTE
Decadent dark treacle and a gentle kick of cracked black pepper yield to a smooth, expanding vanilla warmth. The finish lingers impressively, bringing back waves of dark molasses alongside distinct, grassy agricultural notes.
ABOUT THE LABEL
Only the second of the 70cl “evolved” rum labels, the original Jim’ll Paint It-designed label is maintained, just updated tastefully: simply showing us a rum barrel, with a glass filled with rum sitting on top of the barrel. The barrel is surrounded by an american-beauty-esque* blanket of vanilla flowers.
