ABOUT THIS WINE CASK SERIES BOTTLING
Black Gate was one of our very successful Australia Series whiskies, this is the second cask we bought. It’s from a ‘solera style’ vatting of casks, all of which were ex-port. A minimum age of three years, although much of the liquid is older. Bottled at 46.1% abv
Tawny Port also offers notes of nut, caramel and chocolate. Sometimes even some light taste of tobacco results from the maturing in wood casks. With increasing age, the fresh fruit aromas are transforming into ones of dried fruits and raisins.
I’ve told the label story in our Australian release, but there’s one small change to our batch 2 label - Brian’s motorbike can be seen parked out front now.
Nose
Fragrant, with Summer hedgerow blossom, fruit syrup, and nutty chocolate bars.
Palate
Fruit syrup with plum, cherry, and hints of wild strawberry. Fragrant pipe tobacco and hints of burnt sugar. Herbal notes in the finish.
About the Label
The distillery building is located next to their bungalow home. Kangaroos and emus are a common sight here, often getting onto the property and wandering around outside the distillery.
Their small dachshund ‘Frankie’ an unofficial mascot of the distillery has been found herding wandering emus off the property.
