ABOUT THIS BOTTLING
Our first batch of Rye from Distillery 291 is an 11 month old, a release of just 496 bottles at 49.9% abv.
Distillery 291 is an award-winning, small batch whiskey distillery nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
Located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the distillery sits in the shadows of Cheyenne Mountain and the majestic Pikes Peak.
Founder Michael Myers was a former New York City fashion and beauty photographer before turning his love for whiskey into his business. Myers grew up on rural family farms in Georgia and Tennessee, across a countryside defined by rolling hills, horses, Jack Daniels and George Dickel.
Myers built his original still from copper photogravure plates that he had once used. On September 11, 2011 - ten years after 9/11 changed his life and the lives of so many others - Myers pulled his first whiskey off of that still. With a nod to tradition, the mash is soured in open air fermenters before it is distilled three times in locally-made pot stills.
The whiskey is aged in virgin, heavy charred, American white oak barrels and is then brought to a finish on toasted aspen staves, which are harvested from a friend’s nearby land.
When we first met Michael, he had just been awarded The World’s Best Rye at the World Whiskies Awards 2018.
NOSE
Old fashioned cola cubes, pear drops, cherry sours, rye toast, and a touch of salt.
TASTE
Syrupy stem ginger, cherry brandy, candied lemon peel and a slight almond nuttiness coming through. Sweet glacier cherries and a warming peppery end.
ABOUT THE LABEL
This label has a 1920’s noir feel about it and is inspired by an old photograph of an art gallery.
Distillery 291 was founded by Michael Myers in Colorado. Not not the Michael Myers from the Halloween movie we’ve shown on the label.
The other two characters are Alfred Stieglitz (who’s gallery this label is inspired by) and American Photographer, Sculptor, Painter, and Filmmaker, Man Ray.
