Distillerie de Labourdonnais is a relatively new facility in the village of Mapou, Mauritius. Built in 2006 (although it was originally called Rhumerie des Mascareignes), it features a continuous column still set up for the distilling rum made from fresh sugarcane juice. This delicate “rhum agricole” is all about the cask. Freshly distilled Rum was shipped to the UK and placed in an ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry barrel, where it picked up all manner of fruity notes to compliment the sugarcane juice Rum as distilled then left to mellow in a refill American oak barrel to marry. Balanced? Not exactly. Delicious without the use of any additives at all? Enthusiastically, YES!!!

We’re expecting a run of just 323 bottles for this absolute stunner, so act fast!

NOSE

An enticing, multi-layered bouquet opens with rich vanilla aromas, balanced by a hint of fresh sugarcane juice. Delicate floral notes unfold alongside sweet liquorice, warm baking spices, and a touch of spiced dried fruits.

TASTE

Luxuriously smooth and mellow, leading with deep black treacle and a gentle prickle of warming black pepper. Over time, silky vanilla notes emerge to coat the palate, harmonising with subtle grassy accents and dark dried fruit. The long, lingering finish brings a return of rich treacle alongside fresh, vibrant vegetal sugarcane flavours.

ABOUT THE LABEL

Only the second of the 70cl “evolved” rum labels, the original Jim’ll Paint It-designed label is maintained, just updated tastefully: simply showing us a rum barrel, with a glass filled with rum sitting on top of the barrel. The barrel is surrounded by an american-beauty-esque* blanket of vanilla flowers.
